The AVO Expresivo Toro carries the name of a brand built on expression. AVO was created in 1988 by jazz pianist and composer Avo Uvezian, who brought a musician’s ear for rhythm and balance to the craft of blending. Expresivo — Spanish for "expressive" — is the line that takes the idea furthest, pairing an Ecuadorian wrapper with Central American tobaccos for a medium to full cigar with plenty to say.
An Ecuadorian wrapper leaf covers a Honduran binder and a filler of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. It opens on fine wood and a floral lift, with a light touch of white pepper, then builds through the middle into creamy coffee, dark chocolate and a toasted, earthy depth. The final third brings dried fruit and nuts forward, with leather underneath — a blend that keeps developing rather than settling.
The Toro (152 mm) stretches the blend over a longer, more leisurely smoke, giving the creamy middle section room to settle before the leather and dried fruit arrive. It is presented in a red wooden box of 20 cigars.
Pair it with an aged rum or a well-pulled espresso to meet the chocolate and coffee notes, or with a lightly peated whisky to play against the leather on the finish.
